COME VISIT AND SPEND The NIGHT
When visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, climbing one of the 10 Fourteeners in the neighborhood or just want to experience what off-grid living is all about, come stay with us and see what 8000 feet above sea level feels like as well as full on sun at this altitude. Leave us a message if interested.

living off the grid mission:
Living off the grid is really not as difficult as everyone must think. We live off grid and write eBooks, blog, tweet, and pin about living off the grid and survival preparation. In addition we sell solar systems to support our off grid experience and help reduce your on grid electric bill. You can get started today and be OFF GRID TOMORROW or certainly well on your way to greater self reliance, security, a smaller carbon footprint, not to mention save you lots of money. We also design and build off grid alternative powered homes anywhere on the planet. The southern Colorado off-grid solar powered home above is currently on auction. We are in the process of designing and building a micro solar home to be built a short distance from this one. Self Reliance and Survival Preparation
Food, water and shelter are my first 3 primary concerns when the SHTF. Building self reliance and reducing dependence on my government by powering my home from the sun utilizing photo voltaic solar panels is just the beginning. The next steps on my "to-do" list include building an aquaponic greenhouse to produce most of my food. An aquaponic system is one that incorporates plants that live off the natural fertilizer produced by the fish and the fish living off the natural nutrients produced by the plants and my family living off both the fish and the plants. In southern Colorado at 8000 feet above sea level the water utilized to contain the fish and nourish the plants will also help to keep the greenhouse warm during cold winter nights. A solar hot water system will also be incorporated to help keep the greenhouse warm.
In addition to growing my own food I want to grow a cash crop of some kind that will allow me to barter and trade for other goods and services I cannot produce here at my home. Eventually the federal reserve fiat currency that everyone in the states uses for a medium of exchange, as well as around the world, will not be accepted anymore. At this point barter may become a very real system of exchange. By growing and or manufacturing some cash and barter crops I hope to supplement my existence. Both marijuana and ethanol are two potential choices. The San Luis Valley is the third largest potato producer in the United States. Ethanol can be manufactured and extracted from these tubers to produce not only a barter substance, but also a fuel to power a vehicle. Most early Model T's ran on both gasoline and ethanol. Our country's first and second Presidents also distilled ethanol in their barns for themselves and their friends. Today, obviously, we are dictated to by our government and prohibited from distilling spirits for our own consumption. I am looking forward to the day when this is no longer the case.
I currently have a 245 foot deep well that produces some of the cleanest and purest water on the planet. This water comes directly from the Blanca massif and is filtered through approximately 6000 feet of mother earth before it reaches my property. In the future my plan is to build two cisterns to capture rain water from my roof and store it for an additional back up water supply.
Obviously raising chickens, cattle, or sheep would also be a good idea as well as perhaps pigs and other live stock. There are several ranchers in the area that raise Alpaca and Llama. Elk, deer, antelope, rabbit, rattle snake and other game are plentiful here and can be eaten if necessary.
I don't know if that SHTF moment will arise in my lifetime or not, but with the current currupt economic policies that proliferate around the globe, the inexorable rape of the earths natural resources and unrelenting march of the corporatocracy, the continued "me first" attitude that seems to be paramount on our government's agenda these days, shrugging and taking care of myself and my family seems to be an expedient exercise. Who is John Galt anyway?
